MEGT Institute is able to offer students the opportunity to undertake training
in formal qualifications whilst still at school. We run a variety of programs for
secondary school students, combining skills in work and study.

If you are a student, a business or a school, please contact the MEGT Institute
office in your State or Territory.

Australian School-based Apprenticeships

Australian School-based Apprenticeships (ASBAs) are an extension of the Vocational
Education program, which can complement, or stand independently of the Vocational Placement programs. They are also known as School Based Traineeships.

Students can participate in the AS-bA program during their school years 10 to 12, provided they are 15 years or over.

AS-bA students must remain at school or college after entering into a training contract, but are required to attend structured workplace training on a regular basis throughout the AS-bA.

Successful completion of an AS-bA enables the student to achieve a nationally recognised qualification (usually Certificate II or III) that will also count as part of their Year 12 Certificate and a component of further industry training.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow secondary school students to work for an employer, train towards a recognised qualification and complete their secondary school studies. They are available across a wide range of fields and provide students with:

  • • qualifications or skills that are recognised Australia-wide
    • hands-on experience in a workplace
    • paid work
    • confidence and contacts to move from school to work or further study
    • a head start in a career.

VET in Schools

VET in Schools programs are designed to expand opportunities and pathways for senior secondary students and improve post-compulsory educational outcomes in line with the Government's goals and targets, as well as address the employment needs of industry.

Introduced in 1994, VET in Schools programs comprise nationally recognised VET certificates undertaken by senior secondary students as part of their formal secondary education. They provide a vocationally oriented program of studies leading to a secondary school certificate. VET in Schools programs are typically delivered through partnership between schools, industry and training providers and often include opportunities for students to participate in workplace learning.
