Apprenticeships & Traineeships
Australian Apprenticeships encompass all Apprenticeships and Traineeships. They combine time at work with training and can be full-time, part-time or school-based.
Australian Apprenticeships are the best way to combine training and employment and they can lead to a nationally recognised qualification.
Australian Apprenticeships are available to anyone of working age and do not require any entry qualifications. You can be a school-leaver, re-entering the workforce or simply wishing to change careers.
Australian Apprenticeships:
- • are a great way to get a head start in a chosen career
• provide paid work and structured training that can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both
• are ‘Competency based’ which means you can complete your training faster if you reach the required
skills level
• recognise existing skills and prior experience and course credit granted, potentially reducing formal
training time
• are available as full-time or part-time, also available part-time in many schools
• lead to nationally recognised qualifications and skills which provide the basis for further education
and training over the course of your working life
• provide a pathway from school to work.
Australian School-based Apprenticeships
School students can complete an Australian Apprenticeship whilst they are still at school. This is known as an Australian School-based Apprenticeship.
Australian School-based Apprenticeships do not provide direct financial assistance to an Australian Apprentice, however, the Australian Government aims to create more employment opportunities for Australian Apprentices by providing additional incentives to employers who take on Australian School-based Apprentices.
For more information on Australian School-based Apprentices, go to the Australian Government Australian Apprenticeships website.
Assistance available for Australian Apprentices
The Australian Government has introduced a number of initiatives to help ease the financial difficulties Australian Apprentices experience in the early years of their Australian Apprenticeship, particularly in trades experiencing a skills shortage. These initiatives provide financial support to Australian Apprentices through the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program.
Please note, the Australian Apprenticeships website provides information on the incentives available from the Australian Government only. Australian Apprenticeships Centres are responsible for determining eligibility for these incentives. Other assistance and incentives may be available from your State or Territory Training Authority.
